01 Design

Only problem is, I didn’t have any of the parts…and I was struggling to get my ratios right and get such a rocket just as stable as I wanted it.

However, I did have some bigger LOC stuff from a half-hearted attempt to rebuild an Estes Honest John into an F-capable rocket…here’s a chance to test some of my bright ideas. Like a baffle chamber, a zipper-proof setup, things like that.

Naturally, I used RockSim to design it. Is there any other way?

Basic Parts List:

  • (1) Nose Cone, Ogive, LOC Precision - LOC PNC-2.56
  • (1) Airframe LOC/Precision - LOC BT-2.56
  • (1) Tube Coupler - TC-2.56
  • (3) Bulkhead Plate - LOC BP-2.56
  • (3) Centering Ring - LOC CR-2.56-1.14
  • (1) Fin Material - 1/8 Aircraft Plywood
  • (1) Launch Lug - LOC LL25
  • (1) Motor Mount - LOC MMT-1.14

Once I had the design, I started in. Some good things: I’ve found some alarmingly easy short cuts for some stuff that always scared me in the past. For instance: A power miter box. I am completing the trim on this house, so I have the miter saw setup for making the cuts. Did you know that it cuts kraft tubing just as easily? Perfect 90 degree cuts, without weirdo jigs and hours of hobby knife work.

Some bad things: What was I thinking when I made the motor mount tube so short? I never intended to use anything past a 29/120 engine…but making the mmt longer would have shifted my CG forward and made the rocket easier to stablize. Oh well.

To start, I jointed the 29mm motor mount tube to a 2.56″ tube coupler with a 5-ply Birch plywood centering ring. The CR on the right is just there so I could roll the joint around while the superglue dried–to make sure that it was all plumb. I followed this up with 30-minute epoxy inside and out.

BTW, before I forget it, all the parts are from LOC/Precision, except the finstock which I purchased at a local hobby shop for about 3 bucks a sheet. Just so you know, if you order the aircraft plywood online, they get $12.00 or so a sheet. I ordered the second batch of parts, including the nose cone from RedArrow Hobbies.
